A Cruelty Free New York is in your hands
We have been working hard to build support for the New York Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act to end the sale of new animal-tested cosmetics in the state, and it’s paying off!
The bill, led by Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal (D/WF-Manhattan) in the Assembly and Senator Alessandra Biaggi in the Senate, has now passed committee hearings in both chambers and will soon go to a floor vote in the Assembly and Senate where every member will have an opportunity to vote in its.
If passed, New York would join California, Nevada, Illinois, Hawaii, Maryland, Maine, Virginia, and New Jersey in enacting cruelty free cosmetics legislation. Passing the legislation in New York, widely regarded as a global fashion and beauty capitol, could be the tipping point that leads to the passage of a federal Humane Cosmetics Act that would harmonize cruelty free rules across the nation.
New York State Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal said: “Animal testing for cosmetics is painful, cruel and unnecessary. Prohibiting the sale of cosmetics containing ingredients that were tested on animals will benefit animals, consumers and the industry as a whole. It is imperative that New York pass this law.”
New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi said: “I am proud to introduce this legislation in Albany and work alongside Assemblymember Rosenthal, Cruelty Free International and many other animal welfare organizations to end the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in New York State for good.”
Monica Engebretson, Head of Public Affairs North America for Cruelty Free International, said: “US history has shown that state activity leads to changes at the federal level. Our state efforts have served as a catalyst to bring stakeholders to the table and have served as a solid base for federal legislation. We applaud Assemblymember Rosenthal and Senator Biaggi for their leadership to make New York cruelty free and help build momentum for a nationwide end to animal testing for cosmetics.”
New Yorkers can help consign animal testing for cosmetics to the history books. If you are a New York resident, show your support for the New York Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act with our quick tool at https://crueltyfreeinternational.org/NewYork.
